A room to room fan is an ideal way to gain maximum benefit from the warm air produced from your wood stove, and the perfect complement to your wood stove fan.

If you already have a wood burning stove then you know how cozy and economical they are to run, especially during the cold winter months.

Wood stoves are easy to maintain and emit a lot of heat into the surrounding room. The first item I suggest anyone buys to make use of all this heat is a wood stove fan - in particular the Eco Fan.

The heat is distributed throughout the room with minimal fuss and efficiency. But because heat rises, much of this heat is still lost through the ceiling.

Installing a room to room fan at the top of the door is a great way to maximise the majority of this lost heat and send it into an adjoining room.

If you're thinking of buying a room to room fan, you won't be disappointed, as long as you get the right one. I've tested 3 door fans and the Achla Minuteman Room to Room Doorway Fan has worked the best by far.

Here's a quick review if your interested in getting the same one:

Achla Designs Room-to-Room Minuteman Doorway Fan

There are a few room to room fans or doorway fans to choose from and they all try to do the same thing - send hot air into the next room or hallway ect.

Unfortunately some of the fans are too lightweight and made of cheap plastic. They don't last as long and are not as efficient.

Although the Achla Fan is also made of plastic, it is coated in graphite powder and looks and feels a lot more sturdy.

It is an amazingly quite fan and rotates at 1100 revs per minute. It looks pretty cool too, which is an added bonus!

Here is the fan's main features:

Life-long lubricated motor for continuous use and maintenance free.

Easily reversible to change airflow direction.

Eleven feet of cord included, with on/off switch.

Single speed, 55 CFM (1100 RPM).

Fan size at widest points: 4.75'' H x 4.75'' W x 1.75'' D.

Strong, graphite powder coated frame with mounting brackets included.

You can buy this door to door fan, cheapest on Amazon through this link

Pros:

Well designed and built from a reputable company.

Extremely quiet, whilst effectively distributing large quantities of warm air.

Cons:

Slightly more expensive than other models, but is far superior and designed to last many years.

Who is the fan for?

Like any door to door fan, the Achla model is perfect for energy conscious users who want to gain maximum benefit from the heat emitted from their wood stove or similar heat source.

Conclusion

If you have a wood stove, fireplace or something similar, which heats one room, this whisper quiet, door to door fan will circulate warm air into adjoining rooms otherwise lost through the ceiling or roof. The Achla model is currently the market leader and worth the extra few dollars.

I have installed 2 of them in my home which warms my kitchen and separate dinning room. They work just great and importantly they use hardly any electricity to power them. Mine are running almost 24/7.

Here is a review by a recent purchaser:

Great Little Fan! by Dave

"Pleasantly surprised by the small size and how super quiet this fan is. We have it positioned at the top of out main living room and use it to send warm air from our wood stove to other areas of the house. It does a great job of sucking in the warm air circulating at ceiling height and pushing it through to other parts of the home.

Works much better than previously trying to use a large, free-standing fan; which was very noisy, got in the way and didn't do a very good job. The unit comes almost fully assembled and it only took a few minutes to mount it on the door frame. Will be getting another one very soon."

The Ecofan can add as much as 3 to 4 degrees to the temperature of a room. Here's my review..

If there's one thing you should invest in for your wood stove, it’s a wood stove fan. And the good news is, there’s one particular stove fan on the market that will meet your needs perfectly.

Introducing the Ecofan! The reason I am reviewing this particular fan is because there isn’t another type of fan like it on the market, probably due to its patent technology. Also because I happen to own 2 of them and I simply love them!

Ecofan Airplus 802

The eco fan is made by a Canadian company called Caframo Ltd. who has been making stove fans and similar products for over 10 years.

The fan is a free-standing product that sits on top of your stove. It incorporates thermal electric technology which basically means the heat from the stove heats the base of the fan and keeps the top cool. This concentration of heat generates its own electricity, powering the fan blades and circulating the warm air produced by the wood burner into your room. For the more inquisitively minded, it is also known as a sterling engine.

Here are some of the features and benefits of the Ecofan 802:

Features:

- Needs a surface temperature of between 150 to 650 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Fan body is constructed of anodized extruded aluminum and blades are anodized brass color
- Made to sit on the top of freestanding wood-burning stoves: heat stoves, wood stoves, pellet stoves, wood cook stoves.

Benefits:

- It doesn’t require any external power source or batteries. Runs solely on the electricity it generates from the hot stove.
- Environmentally friendly.
- Works silently with little to zero maintenance.
- Free standing and cordless.
- Set and forget. Starts automatically as soon as it hits the required temperature. No turning on or off.
- 3 blades instead of 2 which circulates up to 50% more air.
- An environmentally friendly product.
- Beautifully styled and looks just great on top of your stove.

Having my Ecofan running as opposed to not having one means the difference in temperature in my living room is as much as 3 to 4 degrees warmer during the winter. This is a massive difference and also means I use less wood.

The fan’s speed acts as a nice little visual indicator as to whether I need to add more wood to the burner. As soon as I notice the fan slowing down slightly, I know I’ll soon need to add some more logs.

When positioning the fan you’ll probably need to experiment as to the best place for it. I have mine away from the front of the stove and chimney flue. And it works at its maximum efficiency. You’ll discover the best position by sighting it in various places.

Conclusion

The ECOFAN is a fantastic but simple innovation that does the job of circulating the warm air around your home perfectly. It is a great stove accessory - a 'green' product that saves on energy use and cuts heating bills.

If there were any cons to this product it would be the price. Caframo fans are not that cheap at over $100.. but worth the money all the same! This is one item that you must get and you won’t be disappointed with the results.

If you have an Ecofan, whether it is the 2 bladed ecofan 800 or the 3 blade ecofan 802, I would love to hear your comments.

Now you have your wood stove, there are various accessories you can purchase to make your burner run more efficiently and economically.

A wood stove fan is one of those accessories that make a big difference to heating much more of your home. But to run your fan as efficiently as possible and get the most benefit from it, you need to ensure you’re burning wood at the correct temperature.

Not only will burning wood at the right temperature improve your fan’s efficiency, it can also ensure you’re not damaging your wood stove.

If you burn wood at a cooler temperature it creates creosote which coats the inside of your chimney. If you’re chimney isn’t cleaned, after so long, this build up of creosote can ignite and potentially cause a chimney fire which in turn could even cause a house fire.

It is also a less efficient way of burning wood, as the lower temperature produces less heat while you still burn the same quantity. It also pollutes the atmosphere due to huge amounts of particulate matter being sent up into the sky.

At the other end of the scale, burning wood in your stove that is too hot will also cause its own set of problems.

The main issue with burning too hot is the amount of energy that’s being wasted. A lot of the heat will simply disappear up the chimney instead of into the room.

Excessive heat can also damage the working parts of your wood stove and may even cause a chimney fire.

So it’s important to know the temperature of your wood stove so you can maintain a comfortable, safe and efficient level of heat.

Other than guessing what the temperature may be, the only sure way to know is to get a thermometer, or rather a wood stove thermometer, which is designed specifically for your wood burner.

They are cheap enough to buy and can simply be placed on the stove surface. They have a magnet on the back to ensure they stay nicely in place.

If you have a wood burning stove, investing in a wood stove thermometer is a must. Burning wood at the correct temperature will help get the best heat output from your stove and lengthen the lifespan. It also substantially reduces fuel consumption.

I bought the Medallion stove top model, featured here, a few months ago and it works just fine.

If you have a wood stove then having a fan will increase its efficiency, make your room and home much warmer and ultimately save you more money.

There are several benefits to running a wood stove or wood burner and if you are reading this, you probably don’t need to be sold on the idea of purchasing one, as you’ve already got one, right?

If you are already using a wood stove, then good on ya! No doubt you love it, just as I love mine. Even though we love our beautiful, heat-producing stoves, they do come with certain limitations.

A solid metal wood stove is designed to become a radiant heat source. Very little heat energy is lost up the flue which happens with a normal fireplace. The problem with a radiant heating system, like our wood stove, is to get an even distribution of that heat. Anyone sitting near the wood stove may feel comfortably warm or even hot, but others, further away may experience cold spots and drafts. You may also feel some heat benefit in adjourning rooms and corridors, but not an awful lot.

Heat More of Your Home With A Wood Stove Fan

You can purchase electric stove fans which are usually more efficient at distributing the heat. However, they are not without their own problems. They add to the overall cost of running the stove and can breakdown through constant exposure to high temperatures. Recent innovations in wood stove fans technology means there are now excellent fans that work purely by utilizing the radiant heat produced from the stove.

A non-electrical, wood stove fan is designed to sit as a free-standing unit, on top of your stove and to circulate the radiant heat the stove produces, into the rest of the room and other rooms of the house. It enables you to generate heat to these nearby areas without increasing the temperature of the wood stove or using any sort of electrical device.

The fan works by using the heat from the stove to generate low-voltage electricity, which in turn powers the blades of the fan. This is often referred to as the Sterling Engine. The fan itself is designed to withstand the high temperatures of a wood burning stove. The hotter the stove becomes, the faster and more efficient the fan becomes. Likewise, as the stove cools during the night, the fan slows down accordingly.

No additional electricity is needed to run the fan, so the savings in energy costs are measurable over a winter season. As you may gather, a wood stove fan is an accessory well worth having:

* It creates its own electricity
* It turns on and off automatically with the temperature of the stove
* Costs nothing to run
* Runs silently
* Nothing to install. Simply place on top of your wood stove
* Warms a greater area of the home including other rooms
* Is environmentally friendly
* Pay for itself in just a 3 or 4 month, winter season

The advantages of having one of these little fans sitting on top of your wood burner are plain to see. The models available today are extremely efficient and will make a real difference to the warmth of your home.

Our top recommendation, and to be honest the only wood stove fan worth purchasing is the Ecofan Airplus, 3 Blade Fan. This is an excellent fan that meets all the criteria for home use and has plenty of positive reviews.

"Outstanding Boost To My Wood Stove..

..My wife and I love this product. We wanted a fan that made little or no noise to place on our wood stove to help move the air. We found this product to meet our needs. it produces no noise and looks great on our stove. My sister-in-law saw it and said to her husband that’s what we need at the cabin. Friends were amazed at how well it worked. Great product!" By WiseEOD from Abilene, KS

"We already had a magic heat on the stove when we moved in, but this fan is a great addition to our system. It moves air and heat around even while the stove is still getting up to operating temperature. We noticed a difference in the overall comfort of the house the first night and when we lost electrical power during an ice storm, the house stayed very comfortable and warm even without our electric fans running." By Muggs from Albion, Michigan

Check out the video below to see the EcoFan in action:

I hope have found find the information here to be informative and useful in your search for a wood stove fan. Quite often accessories that come with products aren’t worth the extra cost. However, these fans are certainly good value for money and in my personal experience, worth getting.

I have 2 wood burners and both of them have a fan sitting on top. The difference it has made to the warmth of my home during the winter months has been amazing and they have more than paid for themselves.
