Wood Stove Thermometer

Improve the efficiency and safety of your wood burner with a wood stove thermometer.

Now you have your wood stove, there are various accessories you can purchase to make your burner run more efficiently and economically.

A wood stove fan is one of those accessories that make a big difference to heating much more of your home. But to run your fan as efficiently as possible and get the most benefit from it, you need to ensure you’re burning wood at the correct temperature.

Not only will burning wood at the right temperature improve your fan’s efficiency, it can also ensure you’re not damaging your wood stove.

If you burn wood at a cooler temperature it creates creosote which coats the inside of your chimney. If you’re chimney isn’t cleaned, after so long, this build up of creosote can ignite and potentially cause a chimney fire which in turn could even cause a house fire.

It is also a less efficient way of burning wood, as the lower temperature produces less heat while you still burn the same quantity. It also pollutes the atmosphere due to huge amounts of particulate matter being sent up into the sky.

At the other end of the scale, burning wood in your stove that is too hot will also cause its own set of problems.

The main issue with burning too hot is the amount of energy that’s being wasted. A lot of the heat will simply disappear up the chimney instead of into the room.

Excessive heat can also damage the working parts of your wood stove and may even cause a chimney fire.

So it’s important to know the temperature of your wood stove so you can maintain a comfortable, safe and efficient level of heat.

Other than guessing what the temperature may be, the only sure way to know is to get a thermometer, or rather a wood stove thermometer, which is designed specifically for your wood burner.

They are cheap enough to buy and can simply be placed on the stove surface. They have a magnet on the back to ensure they stay nicely in place.

If you have a wood burning stove, investing in a wood stove thermometer is a must. Burning wood at the correct temperature will help get the best heat output from your stove and lengthen the lifespan. It also substantially reduces fuel consumption.

As I’ve mentioned they are pretty cheap to purchase and you can buy them online from Amazon for less than $20. I bought the Medallion stove top model, featured here, a few months ago and it works just fine.
